Praying for the lost

Prayer is a major aspect of the New Testament Evangelism. The birth of the New Testament Church has a combination of both Prayer and Evangelism according to Acts Chapter 2. They prayed to God and they preached to men. It is important to realise that the salvation of the unsaved is God’s heart beat; it is not his will that any should perish but that all will come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). We ought to pray that His will, his heart beat, be done on earth as it is in heaven. The reason for sending his son was not “…to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” (John 3:17).

The scripture also reveals the condition of the unsaved:

  1. They are condemned: (John 3:18). “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already…”
  2. They are separated from God and are hopeless: (Ephesians 2:12). “… you were separate from Christ… foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world”
(Lord open eye to the eternal hope they have in Christ)
  3. They are blind: (II Corinthians 4:4). “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God”
(Lord open their spiritual eyes, Ephe 1:18)
  4. And they cannot understand the things of the Spirit: (1 Corinthians 2:14). “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned”
(Open their spiritual understanding to your word, to their lost state and their need for salvation)
  5. They are hell bound: (Revelation 20:15). “If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire”
    (Deliver them from destruction)
When we have a true understanding of the condition of the unsaved we will be compelled to stand in that gap and intercede for their salvation. In Praying for the lost two parts of the process must be considered. It is God’s part to touch the hearts of men and it is our part to bring the gospel to the lost.

Prayer:

  1. Pray for an inner work and touch of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of men. According to Romance 10:9, 10 they must believe in their hearts and confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord. No one can say, Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor.12:3).
  2. Pray for the increase and spread of the Gospel among the lost, throughout Dublin and Ireland and the nations.
“So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith” (Acts 6:7). In the light of this scripture the result of the increase and spread of the word of God was more souls being saved”
  3. Pray for more workers, missionaries, evangelists, preachers, churches and ministries with a heart for the lost that will be committed to preaching of the gospel of Christ. (Rom 1:16)
  4. Pray for willing hearts that will freely support and sponsor the preaching of the gospel and give towards missions etc. “And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news” (Rom 10:14, 15)
