DAY 11 – CONTENDING FOR THE NATIONAL AND GLOBAL CHURCH

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

Matt 16:18 (NIV)

Our opening bible text today is one of the most well-known in the New Testament and has been studied, preached, and reflected upon for centuries. It reveals Jesus’ declaration concerning the establishment of His Church and affirms a powerful truth: no force of darkness will ever be able to destroy it.

The Church will not remain stagnant; it is designed to move forward. The Church will not be intimidated by earthly governments, ideologies, political correctness, or prejudice. Historically, the seasons in which the Church grew the most were often times of persecution. Even today, we see this reality in places like China, where despite intense opposition, multitudes continue to give their lives to Christ. The Gospel is unstoppable.

We are Christ’s bride, redeemed through His blood shed on the cross. When we preach the Gospel, we open the door to salvation. The keys are in our hands. Our mission is to rescue souls from the dominion of darkness and bring them into the Kingdom of God. “He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves” (Colossians 1:13, NIV).

Praying and contending for the national and global Church is therefore a vital part of our Christian walk. In a world filled with challenges, opposition, and uncertainty, prayer becomes a powerful instrument for unity, endurance, and spiritual strength.

Why Contending for the Church Is Fundamental

Prayer for the Church is essential for several reasons. First, it aligns us with God’s heart and helps us seek His will. Secondly, it strengthens the bonds between believers, fostering love, unity, and mutual support. Romans 12:4–5 reminds us that although we are many, we are one body in Christ, and each member belongs to the others.

The Power of Corporate Prayer

Corporate prayer carries transformative power. When believers gather to pray—whether in small groups, worship services, or virtually—we create an atmosphere of faith that releases God’s power. Jesus taught that when believers agree in prayer, heaven responds (Matthew 18:18–20).

Corporate prayer allows us to carry one another’s burdens, share testimonies, and grow together in faith. This shared spiritual life builds a strong sense of community that is essential for perseverance and maturity.

How to Pray Effectively for the National and Global Church

– Be Specific: Mention specific people, churches, nations, and situations in prayer (Philippians 4:6).

– Use God’s Word: Praying Scripture brings clarity and power (Matthew 24:35).

– Support the Work Financially: Support your local church and global missions (Malachi 3:10).

– Use Every Opportunity to Share the Gospel: Be ready in season and out of season (2 Timothy 4:2).

– Share Your Testimony: Tell others what the Lord has done for you (Mark 5:19–20).

Prayer Points

1. Pray for Church Leaders in Ireland and globally — That God would grant wisdom, strength, and faithfulness to leaders as they shepherd His people (Hebrews 13:7).

2. Pray for Missionaries Worldwide — That the Lord of the harvest would send and sustain labourers across the nations (Matthew 9:38).

3. Pray for Spiritual Revival for the church in Ireland and the global church — For a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit that brings renewal and bold witness (Acts 2:1–4).

4. Pray for Grace and Knowledge to Preach the Gospel — That believers would grow in grace, understanding, and boldness (2 Peter 3:18).

5. Pray for Unity and Purity in the Church — That the Church worldwide would walk in truth, love, and holiness, free from division and compromise (Ephesians 4:3; John 17:21).

6. Pray for Persecuted Believers — That Christians facing opposition would be strengthened, protected, and emboldened in their witness (Acts 4:29–31; Hebrews 13:3).

    Thank you for the devotional.
To be specific, pray for the nation of Austria. This is a country that has never experienced a Holy Ghost revival. It is a powerhouse in Central Europe and a revival in this country would reverberate to a number of countries, namely Poland, Czech Republic, Turkey and Germany to name a few.

Austria used to be the centre of the Holy Roman Empire and to this day, the government collects 10% from all professing Catholics. This is also the nation where Hitler was born and the country that popularised far right movements.

Pray that God would remember the Austrians and bring the nation to repentance and revival.
