DAY 4 – WALKING IN THE SPIRIT AND OVERCOMING THE POWER OF THE FLESH

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”

‬“For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.”

The Christian journey—this race set before us—is actually a walk. Just like infants who first learn to stand, take hesitant steps, and eventually walk with confidence, the believer must keep walking as well. And just as children stumble when they grow overly confident or unaware of surrounding dangers, even mature believers can stumble when they lose sight of spiritual realities.

As Christians, we have a daily choice: to walk in the flesh or to walk in the Spirit. Scripture teaches that walking in the flesh leads to death, while walking in the Spirit produces life. God’s words to Rebekah in Genesis 25:23 illustrate this inner conflict: “Two nations are in your womb… the older shall serve the younger.” This mirrors the spiritual struggle within every believer. Our old nature—the “older”—is meant to be subject to the new life we have in Christ. The presence of the old does not cancel the reality of the new; rather, the new is meant to rule.

Ephesians reminds us that we face three primary enemies: the world, the flesh, and the devil.

– The world— a system in rebellion against God (Ephesians 2:1–2).

– The devil— our adversary seeking to steal, kill, and destroy (Ephesians 6:11–12; 4:27).

– The flesh— our fallen human nature, often the most subtle enemy (Ephesians 2:3; 4:22).

Walking in the flesh means relying on self-effort to please God. Walking in the Spirit means yielding to the Holy Spirit’s power and allowing Him to shape our desires and decisions.

Walking in the Spirit

To walk in the Spirit is to live a life led, empowered, and sustained by the Holy Spirit. It emphasizes daily reliance, spiritual awareness, and a heart aligned with God’s desires.

– Dependence on God, not self.

– Continual communion—staying aware of His presence and leading.

In 2026, we must be attuned to God’s voice, laying aside old habits, and walking in freedom as we bear the fruit of the Spirit.

Action Steps (Walking in the Spirit)

1. Feed the Spirit with the Word (Ephesians 6:17).

2. Maintain communion—stay conscious of the Spirit’s presence (Galatians 5:25).

3. Pray and listen—develop a prayer life sensitive to His voice (Ephesians 6:18).

4. Learn His ways—understand who the Holy Spirit is (Ephesians 1:17).

5. Yield and obey—act on the desires He stirs within you (Romans 8:14).

The Power of the Flesh

The flesh represents our fallen human nature. Overcoming the flesh involves recognizing the internal struggle between our renewed spirit and old nature. Victory does not come from willpower but by identifying with Christ’s death and yielding to the Spirit.

Temptation is not evidence of failure. We are tempted because we are righteous. Before salvation, sin did not feel like a struggle; now the Spirit resists the flesh within us. Salvation does not remove the flesh; it creates the internal conflict that drives us toward dependence on God.

Tendencies of the flesh:

– False sense of self-sufficiency.

– Alienation from covenant privileges.

The flesh is a traitor—working with temptation and the enemy.

Action Steps (Overcoming the Flesh)

1. Identify with Christ.

2. Yield to the Spirit (Romans 6:13).

3. Crucify desires (Galatians 5:24).

4. Guard your life—protect vulnerable moments.

5. Engage spiritual disciplines—prayer, fasting, Scripture.

Prayer Points: Twofold Action

Put Off the Flesh: Reject sin and resist the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19–21).

1. Lord, help me forgive and lay aside bitterness so I may walk unhindered.

2. I repent of trusting in the flesh—deliver me from self-reliance.

3. I put off the old man and his ways.

4. I lay aside every “Saul’s armour” (1 Samuel 17:38).

Put On the Spirit:

1. Thank You, Lord, that by Your Spirit I can put to death every fleshly desire.

2. I declare that I identify with Christ—not my past or struggles.

3. Father, fill me with Your strength and revelation. (Acts 1:8; 4:31)

4. Lord, give me deep hunger and thirst for the things You’ve prepared. (Matthew 5:3–11)

5. Grant me revelation of Your will and purpose. (Colossians 1:9–10; Ephesians 1:17–19)

“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, …”
    ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭18‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬
A powerful scripture that needs unpacking. Thanks for sharing it.
