“Take heed therefore how ye hear”
My sister had this advice to give me which she was using when we were young, called “Switch off”. Basically she would go away in her head if she is being forced to listen to remarks that she doesn’t like, and pretend to listen till the conversation is over. Years later and she still does it, “switch off when you are being forced to listen to anyone negative or anything that would not bless your life nor add value to it!”
Jesus also gave the admonition to take heed how we hear Luke 8:18. There are many things we listen to as Paul put it in 1 Corinthians 14:10 that there are all kinds of voices in this world and they all have significance. Whether we tend to listen or not, things still come within our earshots so what do we do with them? Switch off our earphones! The basic thing is, what we allow into our hearts is the thing we will ponder on and eventually react to. You can hear something without listening it and that is how we coined Switching Off. It’s just like hearing a song but your mind is far away from listening and following the music.
In Ecclesiastes 7:21, we read “Don’t pay attention to everything people say. If you do, you might hear your servant calling down a curse on you.” Why? People’s comments are based on their feelings at any point in time. They are quick to bless you one day and judge you the very next. What do we listen to or moreso, who do we listen to? This is Jesus’ suggestion to John on the Isle of Patmos in Revelation 3:22, “He who is able to hear, let him listen to and heed what the [Holy] Spirit says to the assemblies (churches).”AMP Listen to the Holy Spirit, He is the Spirit of Truth and the only true and constant encourager. The question then is what is the Spirit saying to the churches? Even more, what is the Holy Spirit saying to me?
Proverbs 2:1-2, 5, 6 “MY SON, if you will receive my words and treasure up my commandments within you, making your ear attentive to skillful and Godly Wisdom and inclining and directing your heart and mind to understanding [applying all your powers to the quest for it]; Then you will understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of [our omniscient] God. For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
When you hear God’s voice calling in your heart, don’t switch those earphones off. Listen, hear and heed, for then you have wisdom, knowledge and understanding on the line for you.
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. Please cause my ears to hear the voice of Your Spirit today, to heed, obey and attend to all You have to say to me, so that my heart will grow in Your wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Please help me to stand firm and not take to heart people’s negative words against me and my faith in You. Thank You in Jesus’ name I pray.
